below for complete booking Detail Tour
Information: Manaus named "Lugar
da Barra" because it is located on the banks of the Negro River at
the meeting with the Solimoes River. In Bahia, Africa abounds! Salvador is the "most" African of all of the Brazilian cities. 80% of the population of over two million people has African ancestry. The local cuisine, musical traditions, dance forms and Bahia's vibrant visual arts are all testaments to this permeating African influence. Rio de Janeiro, known the world over for its samba schools and beautiful beaches, also has strong ties to Africa. These influences can be found in the African-Brazilian museum, church, cemetery and historical neighborhoods that is reflected in the rich cultural heritage of today. Sisterhood of the Boa Morte (Good Death) is the oldest organization for women of African descent in the New World. The Boa Morte Sisterhood is a secret society of African-Brazilian women, all descendants of African slaves, who sponsor a procession each August that parades through the streets of the historical city of Cachoeira on the banks of the Paraguacu River. It is perhaps the most important festival in the African Heritage calendar in Bahia and is a living tribute of African culture and Diaspora to the New World. The history of the Irmandade da Boa Morte (Sisterhood of the Good Death) is part of the history of mass importation of blacks from the African coast to the cane-growing region Bahia. Today, the Sisterhood is located in the historical city of Cachoeira. In a patriarchal society marked by racial and ethnic differences, the confraternity is made up exclusively of black women. Besides the gender and race of the confraternity's members, their status as former slaves and descendants of slaves is an important social characteristic without which it would be difficult to understand many aspects of the confraternity's religious commitments. The Sisterhood has demonstrated enormous adroitness in worshipping in the religion of those in power without letting go of their ancestral beliefs, as well as in the ways they defend the interests of their followers and represent them socially and politically. For nearly 400 years, Robben Island, 7 V2 miles off the coast from Cape Town, was a place of banishment, exile, isolation and imprisonment. It was here that rulers sent those they regarded as political troublemakers, social outcasts and the unwanted of society. During the apartheid years Robben Island became internationally known for its institutional brutality. The duty of those who ran the Island and its prison was to isolate opponents of apartheid and to crush their morale. Some freedom fighters spent more than a quarter of a century in prison for their beliefs. Those imprisoned on the Island succeeded on a psychological and political level in turning a prison 'hell-hole' into a symbol of freedom and personal liberation. Robben Island came to symbolize, not only for South Africa and the African continent, but also for the entire world, the triumph of the human spirit over enormous hardship and adversity. Today, you will be escorted around the island by an ex-political prisoner, and given insight into the past and how the human spirit triumphs.
